Brief history of tennis
Tennis is a game where the ball is exchanged by means of a racket over a net and within the limits of a rectangular field by two or four players.
The word "TENNIS" comes from the old French " TENETS," today " TENEZ " imperative of the verb ‘tenir’ which means "TAKE THIS," or "TO YOU!" an exclamation which, originally, accompanied the launch of the ball to the opponent.
The game of tennis can be traced back to the French "jeu de paume" or game of the ball rope, a sport practised in a room and which consisted of passing a ball from one side of a rope to another hit with the palm of the hand which was covered in leather. From the sixteenth century, the hand was replaced by a wooden racket, the cord by a net and the contest is now held in accordance with the fundamental principles of today’s tennis. Tennis spread rapidly throughout the United States, Australia, Germany, France and Italy (in 1876).
The Wimbledon tournament began in 1877; it was established keeping the service line at 7.92 m from the net after which the distance was shortened to 6.7 m. The first Davis Cup was in 1900. Here, India rubber balls were used covered in white cloth, the weight and size of which were less than is currently the case. The cloth was sewn externally as with baseball balls. Only in 1924 did balls with a soldered covering begin to be used. The ball must have a uniform outer surface and must be white or yellow. Currently, the yellow ball is used in 90 per cent of competitions.
The original shaped modern rackets were created around 1870, were manufactured in wood and the stringed head was pear shaped. The traditional wooden racket evolved then in the late 60's to the first metal rackets. Metal was then changed to fiberglass, to kevlar and to graphite. Regarding the shape, current rackets generally have large stringed heads. As for the strings, however, this has developed from natural gut to an endless array of strings in synthetic materials, nylon and polyamide which in certain cases provide the same characteristics of elasticity and absorption as gut.
